(Click the video to watch how we ended this family's portrait session!)

Last week, the H family invited me to take their family photos on their boat! What a great idea! This is how the family enjoys spending their free time during the summers, so it certainly made sense to schedule a photo shoot here. Unfortunately the weather wasn't the most cooperative - it rained for days before the session, cleared up for a day and then continue to rain for days after the session! Luckily we did catch the sun trying to come out behind the clouds during a few of our images. We were also a bit disappointed that the lakes were at "no wake" due to the all the rain. But we made the best of it and enjoyed a cool summer evening.

"You got so many great shots! In fact right now I have favorited 48! Oh and I love the video! That is such a nice touch to see!"

E Baptism | Lake Zuirch IL Event Photography http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2018/6/e-baptism-lake-zuirch-il-event-photography I had the honor of meeting little E on her baptism day this past weekend. This was an amazing service with many personal touches and highly personalized. This might be because E's dad works at the school!

After pictures at the church, the family moved to the luncheon held just down the street. The staff were amazing, the food looked delicious and I was so sad I couldn't indulge in the sangria!

It's clear that this little one is growing up among a lovely family and I felt beyond lucky to witness this amazing event.

"OMG - this is perfect!! I can't thank you enough and we look forward to working with you again. You captured the beauty of the church and the joy everyone shared. You are indeed talented!"

Baby E | Ingleside IL Newborn Photographer http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2018/6/baby-e-ingleside-il-newborn-photographer Baby E surprised his mom and dad by arriving a few weeks early! Once mom and baby were settled in at home, she contacted me for newborn portraits and we quickly scheduled them in. These guys love the outdoors and want to make sure Baby E enjoys the outdoors as well. We met early one morning and the weather was perfect. Baby E much preferred to be bundled up or snuggled close to dad's warmth. Which is probably for the better because the mosquitos were a bit obnoxious! E was 17 days old in these photographs and he sure nailed it! Congratulations to this proud mom and dad & enjoy those baby snuggles!!

"Thank you for all the wonderful pictures! You've captured some adorable faces E makes...Thanks for making a fun, relaxed photo shoot and capturing so many great memories."

It was actually quite warm this day that we met for photographs. We strategically chose a morning session so this was helpful to get the photos done before the heat of the day set in. While us photographers LOVE shooting at sunset because of the beautiful lighting - an early morning session will give you similar results. And you aren't pushing back your kid's bed times and hoping they cooperate so late at night!

Yesterday I had the great pleasure of joining Little Lake County for their first playground stop of the summer - Citizens Park in Barrington. I had never been before and was highly impressed with the entire playground. First of all, it's huge! The playground is wonderful and is shaded - so important on these hot summer days. There was also a "Treehouse" in the distance, but I didn't get a chance to check it out.

Little Lake County brings quite the entertainment, too, with all sorts of outdoor games and activities, including bubbles, chalk, hula hoops and more. Y-Volution provided these awesome scooters that were quite the hit and snacks were provided by Go-Go-Squeeze, which my kids drink like juice!! Barrington Park District provided some entertainment and was there to answer questions about their summer events and activities.

G + L Wedding | Danada House Wheaton IL http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2018/6/g-l-wedding-danada-house-wheaton-il A few weeks ago I had the honor of joining Kalyn of Rays of Life Photography in capturing her friend's L & G's wedding day on March 24, 2018. Kalyn began the day capturing the bride and her bridal party getting ready at the hotel. I joined them at the Danada House in Wheaton and what an amazing wedding venue! If you love older homes, then this is definitely a place to visit. With the unique floor plan and all these little nooks and cozy spots for family and friends to relax. And the bride took care of everything - there were beautiful details every where you turned!

If you have a tight timeline for your big day, consider stretching the budget and brining in another photographer for the busiest part of the day. While Kalyn was with the bride and her attendants, I was able to work with the groom and capture the guys getting ready and the portraits. Then while Kalyn captured family portraits, I documented the cocktail hour and venue details. Then we captured the ceremony together. It was the perfect combination to getting the most of our photography time, and allowing this happy couple to maximize the time they had to spend with their friends and family.

Don't Wait for the Perfect Moment ~ Take the Picture http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2018/5/dont-wait-for-the-perfect-moment-take-the-picture Many years ago (gosh I don’t like to think about how long ago that really was!) I brought my “nice” camera to my cousin’s wedding. I wasn’t working as a photographer and I didn’t even know how to fully work that camera. But I liked taking pictures and it had been a long time since our family got dressed up for a special occasion.

I took some snapshots – the “kids” table (although the youngest kid was in college), the parents and grandparents at the table next to us. We took some formal photos with the photographer and a few candid ones as well. My mom still has these pictures in frames in her hallway.

What I didn’t know at that time was that one of my pictures was so meaningful that it would forever have a place in our hearts.

Many years later, my grandmother passed away quite unexpectedly. Despite the grief and sadness, funeral arrangements were made. A few weeks later, my grandfather chose a headstone that allowed for an image to be etched into the stone.

The photo he chose? This one. That one quick snapshot I took while we were waiting for dinner at my cousin’s wedding.

Never would I have imagined this image would have such a meaningful place in our lives.

We spend our day to day lives quite busy – from work, school, sports practices, grocery shopping and the occasional vacation. We don’t think to take the time to pull out the camera and take pictures every day – or even every week. Even I waited until this one special occasion to bring out the camera.

But if we wait until the perfect moment, or wait until we have the time … well that time may just pass us by before it’s too late to even realize it.

Are there any images you wish you had taken, but didn’t?

My challenge to you this week … take a picture of something – anything – that you know you will treasure many years from now. Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Or wait for the kids to get their haircuts. Or for the house to get cleaned. Or … whatever it might be. Take the picture and send it to me! There might just be a special portrait offer in there for you, too. ;-)

R Family | Lake Villa IL Family Portraits http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2018/4/r-family-lake-villa-il-family-portraits I met this family and little baby C about 9 months prior to this photo session. Mom had contacted me to set up an extended family portrait session. We had nearly 20 people in those images - blended families and kids of all ages! We met in the early spring and completed those portraits. They were quick (it was cold!) but think of wedding day family portraits. We got the right grouping of people, looked to the camera and smiled, and then switched to another grouping of family members.

While these images were perfect for this blended - extended family session, it's not what this mom had in mind for her family portraits. When she contacted me again in the fall, she sent a few Pinterest images to be able to communicate the look she was hoping for. The images included more interaction among family members (in photographer speak - candid images) where they were looking at each other, not at the camera (those are called camera aware images). She also had some gorgeous lighting in the Pinterest pictures - beautiful sun flare peaking out behind the family.

I told this momma that I could ABSOLUTELY capture these images for her and that I would much prefer these candid images over the formal family portraits. We met early Sunday morning in the fall at a local forest preserve (Hastings Lake - the one with the awesome playground!) And I think we nailed it -  these might be Pinterest-worthy themselves!!

G Family | Ingleside IL Family Portraits http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2018/3/g-family-ingleside-il-family-portraits This momma and I go way back ... I mean like, grade school way back! Although we don't spend nearly as much time together as we used to, it so refreshing when you get together with old friends and things pick back up as though no time had passed by!

Anyway, we schedule for a beautiful evening session and got together just as the sun was setting. This is the PERFECT time of day - if your kids can handle being up that late. In the middle of summer, the sun doesn't set until well after 8pm. But in the fall, we often meet around 5-6pm in order to take advantage of that golden hour of sunlight.

This little man sure enjoyed the undivided attention of both his parents for the duration of this photo shoot. And every stick, rock and interesting leaf along the way! Just like you would expect from a four year old boy. But he sure rocked these pictures with his parents!

J Newborn Pictures | Genoa City WI Baby Photographer http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2018/3/j-newborn-pictures-genoa-city-wi-baby-photographer Most photographers recommend newborns be photographed within 7-10 days old. This is because babies change so quickly and lose their newborn features after about two weeks of age. Remember how your newborn would always leave their legs all curled up underneath them and how they would yawn and stretch and wiggle those toes? Yeah - those are the details we so quickly forget ... and why we want to capture images when they are still in the newborn stage.

That being said, please don't hesitate to reach out if your child is past the 10 day old window. This little guy was almost one month old when we took these pictures and he was a perfect model! Took just a little coaxing but fell fast asleep and let us play around with poses and blankets without any more than a squeal out of him!

B Family ~ Wadsworth IL Family Photos http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2018/3/b-family-wadsworth-il-family-photos Last summer my husband won a scooter in a raffle at a summer event. Yes, he really did drive it around for a few weeks before selling it. He wants to use the money to buy a golf cart, but that's a story for another day.

My husband will always splurge for raffle tickets or give a few dollars for a candy bar and any other random thing he's asked to donate to. Defending his choice to drop some cash on yet another auction item, he would say "but it's for a good cause!" And he has said this so many times, its become a joke in our family.

This session was given away "for a good cause" - a mutual friend of ours had a child that was so very sick and was raising money for expenses. I can't fathom the grief she must be facing and can't even wrap my head around that.

Regardless, these guys purchased my donated session and quickly arranged to use their gift certificate. We met in Wadsworth IL for this portrait session. Mom and I hit it off immediately with a mutual love for LuLa Roe leggings & our husbands share the same name!

They last time they had family photos taken these girls were just toddlers. They were having an amazing time running around, dancing and playing (probably because they didn't need to wear their hats and coats on this chilly day!).

Taking the Leap ~ Introducing Wedding Photography http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2018/3/taking-the-leap-introducing-wedding-photography Have you ever been so scared to try something ... but then when you finally did, learned it wasn't really as bad as you thought?

I have - many times, actually. I am definitely not a thrill seeker. Maybe in my "younger days" as I drove a Mustang GT (red - convertible, of course) through the Chicago winters. It was a challenge getting that car through more than an inch of snow on even the slightest incline!

Or that crazy water slide at the Dells. We spend many long weekends at the Wilderness Resort in the Wisconsin Dells. They have one of those single rider body slides - the kind where you stand at the top and the floor drops out from underneath you and you fall through the sky. But wait - it gets worse. This slide then loops you back up in the air and backwards around yourself, essentially creating an upside down roller coaster-like loop in the air before bringing you back down to the ground in a splash pool of water. And yeah, I did it. (Just once though - that was enough!)

But afterwords you get this adrenaline high - this rush - from the thrill seeking adventures. And I don't know if anything beats that! I think it's such an amazing release after the stress you were feeling just a few minutes earlier.

Well, that's kind of what wedding photography felt like for me. Too scared to even consider it over the past six years I've been a professional photographer. Because, well, let's face it - there's no do-overs. If a camera freezes up or a memory card goes on the fritz. Or even worse, my images are out of focus or I missed THE kiss. What a disaster, both for the engaged couple and for myself.

So I stuck with portrait photography all these years. First families, then newborns and sports. I've spent these past six years perfecting my photography. Learning how to work the camera efficiently and gain proper exposure in the camera (no fancy photo shop trickery here!). I've perfected my techniques in posing and non-posing to get some candid moments. And learning how to interact with angry teenagers, wild toddlers and grumpy dads so everyone smiles - at least once.

And then I took the leap. I tried a risk free wedding photography event. And man was I surprised! I wasn't nervous at all and came away with some BEAUTIFUL images

Behind the Scenes ~ Post Processing ~ Lake County, IL Photographer http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2018/2/behind-the-scenes-post-processing-lake-county-il-photographer Did you ever wonder why it takes up to two weeks to process your photos and send them back to you? Here's an example of what happens behind the scenes, after your photo shoot is complete.

I'll use this photo from our recent Disney Cruise (yes, it was AMAZING and yes, we put down a deposit to do it again next year!!)

Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.09.44 PMScreen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.09.44 PM

Now this picture has a bit more post processing than I would normally need. I try really hard to get the image as close to perfect as possible in camera (during the photo shoot). However, I had to quickly hand my camera over to a Cast Member (how cool is that - not an employee or staff, they are "Cast Members"!!) to get the shot and I had no chance to adjust the settings.

First I made some adjustments based on the lens I was using - it's a subtle change.

Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.10.06 PMScreen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.10.06 PM

You'll notice less curvature in the outer edges of the image. This is subtle and would be easier to see if the picture was zoomed in tight on the subject. Here, you can see it in the upper left corner how the edge of the background has been straightened out.

Next up was the crop:

Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.10.41 PMScreen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.10.41 PM

On this image, I cropped a bit tighter, taking out some of the background and centering us in the image. During a photo shoot, I might use those cross hairs a bit more and make a more creative image. This is using the "Rule of Thirds," which, in photography speak, means the images are more appealing to our eyes when the subject lines up to one of those cross hairs, rather than the dead center of the photo.

Next I adjusted the white balance. This is also a subtle change, but take a look at Olaf's coloring compared to the original:

Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.11.38 PMScreen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.11.38 PM

The white balance was definitely difficult to do in this image because of all the lighting in this room. Everything from sunlight through the windows, over head lighting, the blue and purple lights for the background and other random spot lighting as this was taken in the dining room. I adjust the white balance on all my photos to ensure that whites turn out white - not blue or yellow tinted.

Here is the most obvious adjustment, the exposure:

Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.12.11 PMScreen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.12.11 PM

This brightens up the photo overall. Now if I was behind the lens in this photo shoot, I would have adjusted this before I took the photo and then made minor adjustments (if any) on the computer. But an amazing camera and an amazing photo editing software means even the worst under exposed photo can be salvaged!

Next, a few adjustments to the exposure's shadows and highlights:

Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.12.58 PMScreen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.12.58 PM

Again, a subtle change, but by brightening up the shadows, you can see that my shorts were blue and not black. You can see more details in Anna's dress and you'll also notice the floor is lighter as it eliminated most of the shadows. Lowering the highlights (the bright areas) is also subtle but you may notice that in the upper left hand corner. Lowering the brightness is most obvious in the natural sky as it tones down the sun glare a bit.

Finally, adjusting the sharpness and contrast:

Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.13.17 PMScreen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.13.17 PM

This is very subtle and it would probably only be seen if I zoom in really tight. I use a lot of sharpness and contrast in landscape photos - brings our the detail in ways you can't even imagine.

And there you go! A before and after:

Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.13.52 PMScreen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.13.52 PM

Now portrait photography also gets some facial retouching, which you can see below:

Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 5.58.39 PMScreen Shot 2018-02-09 at 5.58.39 PM

Eyes are sharpened, under eye circles lightened and that spot beside his mouth is removed. (This is my son so it's probably a crumb left over from lunch!). For adults, I often "smooth" skin which helps lighten up those wrinkles and smooth out any red splotches.

Here's a full size of that image:

Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 9.10.27 PMScreen Shot 2018-02-09 at 9.10.27 PM

You can see that the before and after is a bit more subtle than the Frozen picture. This is better example of what the images looks like straight out of camera and with some gentle post processing.

Hope you have enjoyed this tour of behind the scenes after the photo shoot!

Fall Portraits http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2017/10/fall-portraits Welcome to October 2017! The weather is very fall-like ... 95 degrees and sunny one day, 65 and cloudy the next! Fall portraits are well underway and these temperatures have been beautiful for pictures. As long as it stays dry (which is has - we are in a bit of a drought) we can create some amazing portraits no matter what the temperature.

Recreating Family Photos ~ G Family ~ Libertyville, IL http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2017/9/recreating-family-photos-g-family-libertyville-il Family Portraits

You know those posts you've seen on Facebook where grown children recreate their childhood photos - same crazy clothes and all? I've always wanted to do that, but with 5 children in my family, it's going to take a lot of coordination! As a photographer, it's the greatest compliment when I hear a family say that my photos have been on their walls since their last photo shoot five years ago. Photography is art and it should be displayed proudly on our walls. Here is that image:

G Family Children's Portraits

These kids wanted to recreate their favorite image from the last photo shoot. And while they kids have grown into teenagers and young adults, I think they nailed it!

Put your best face forward! http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2017/9/put-your-best-face-forward You guys - it's picture day at school today! Even I get so nervous to be in front of the camera from time to time!! And of course my children were up having a party at 3am so I'm exhausted and overslept this morning. But not to worry - I'll only have this photo on my school ID and lanyard to haunt me for the rest of the school year!

This reminds me of my favorite flattering photo tip ... eliminating the dreaded double chin! We all have it - it makes no difference your size or age. There is skin on our necks and our natural posture doesn't tend to be the most flattering. (Please excuse the mug shot selfie ... but you know, this is real life!)

image1image1

How to eliminate it? Stick your chin out! I tell my clients to think of a chicken - elongate your neck and jut your chin forward, just a tad. It certainly feels funny, but it looks great for photos!

image2image2

I'll be sure to share my school portrait when they come in. But for now, here's last year's mug shot - 9 months pregnant and swollen with 90+ degree days! This year's photo has got to be better!
