Fall Portraits http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2017/10/fall-portraits Welcome to October 2017! The weather is very fall-like ... 95 degrees and sunny one day, 65 and cloudy the next! Fall portraits are well underway and these temperatures have been beautiful for pictures. As long as it stays dry (which is has - we are in a bit of a drought) we can create some amazing portraits no matter what the temperature.

Looking for more information to plan your fall family portrait session? Check out this post by my advertising partner, Little Lake County.

Recreating Family Photos ~ G Family ~ Libertyville, IL http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2017/9/recreating-family-photos-g-family-libertyville-il Family Portraits

You know those posts you've seen on Facebook where grown children recreate their childhood photos - same crazy clothes and all? I've always wanted to do that, but with 5 children in my family, it's going to take a lot of coordination! As a photographer, it's the greatest compliment when I hear a family say that my photos have been on their walls since their last photo shoot five years ago. Photography is art and it should be displayed proudly on our walls. Here is that image:

G Family Children's Portraits

These kids wanted to recreate their favorite image from the last photo shoot. And while they kids have grown into teenagers and young adults, I think they nailed it!

Put your best face forward! http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2017/9/put-your-best-face-forward You guys - it's picture day at school today! Even I get so nervous to be in front of the camera from time to time!! And of course my children were up having a party at 3am so I'm exhausted and overslept this morning. But not to worry - I'll only have this photo on my school ID and lanyard to haunt me for the rest of the school year!

This reminds me of my favorite flattering photo tip ... eliminating the dreaded double chin! We all have it - it makes no difference your size or age. There is skin on our necks and our natural posture doesn't tend to be the most flattering. (Please excuse the mug shot selfie ... but you know, this is real life!)

How to eliminate it? Stick your chin out! I tell my clients to think of a chicken - elongate your neck and jut your chin forward, just a tad. It certainly feels funny, but it looks great for photos!

I'll be sure to share my school portrait when they come in. But for now, here's last year's mug shot - 9 months pregnant and swollen with 90+ degree days! This year's photo has got to be better!

Best time of day to take photos! http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2017/7/best-time-of-day-to-take-photos Ever wonder when is the best time of day to take photos?

As photographers, we love the "golden hour," as the hour before the sun sets provides some beautiful lighting.

But for those of us with little kids, that hour before sunset is also known as the "witching hour" as our kids are just nuts! No matter how well behaved your kids might be, attempting photographs at their typical bedtime is probably not going to end well. 😆

So when should we take those pictures?

Anything other than the mid day hours. This photo was taken about 1-2pm, in the shade, facing away from the sun ... but we are still squinting. The sun during the mid day provides so much bright light that is reflected off of everything around us and it's hard not to squint.

But I still love this photo of myself and four generations of family. So don't wait for the perfect lighting or the perfect backdrop (note the garbage in the parking lot around us?) - just take the photo!

My 4 year has been talking for weeks about updating our family portraits, since we are now a family of four. He had quite a few ideas on how we could get them done. His best plan was that I could wear my vest (which I did) to hide the remote (didn't use it) and we should use the wood chips at the Home Depot parking lot (nope) on Tuesday at 2pm (not then either)!

Instead, we asked my (former) sister in law to stand behind the camera as I figured it would be pretty difficult to get the 9 month old to look toward the camera if no one was there!

Oh the stress - will my kids cooperate - how do we schedule this around nap time - what to wear?!?! Even as a photographer, designing my own portrait session, I still feel the stress!! But they turned out AMAZING and I'm so glad we got these done.

Why use a professional print lab? http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2016/6/why-use-a-professional-print-lab So often I am asked if a professional print lab is really necessary. I know they can't beat the prices at Shutterfly or the turn around time at your local Walgreens. But here's a few things to keep in mind:

Sending your prints to a non-professional lab will produce sub-par prints and inconsistent results. The calibration of the machine and the technician using it will influence the outcome of your images. One day they might have a yellow over cast, next day might be washed out and blue.

Check out these samples below. Look specifically at Samantha's skin tone and hair color. Notice, especially in her hair, how some images look softer and others are more harsh and full of contrast.

Professional Print LabsProfessional Print Labs

The computer I use (my MacBook Pro) to edit images has been calibrated to print at professional print labs, meaning the color profiles will match. The paper quality is superior to absorb those colors and prevent fading over the years.

So where should you print? Check out MPix.com (not an affiliate link - I do not make any money off of your purchases!). Obviously Shutterfly and your local store photo lab are perfectly fine for your daily snapshots. But you've invested in professional quality portraits, why not invest in professional quality prints?

One more thing - if your chosen print lab has the option "Do not color correct", please select this. This means the images will be printed in the color tones that I prepared them to be printed in (or at least as close as possible).

"Because I have a brother, I'll always have a friend."

This mom and I spoke at length before scheduling a photo session for her boys. She was worried about scheduling one of my spring "mini" session. Her boys are rather rambunctious and generally don't sit still for the camera long enough to get anything "good".

I reassured this mom that we would work for as long as it takes to get a few great images. Time frames are just as an estimate, and I tend to work fast. We all know a child's attention span is pretty short! Everyone tends to think their kids are the craziest, (mine included!) but it's really common and I'm totally used to it!

Here are the photos ... do you think we didn't "get anything good?"

Just a few weeks left until her due date, Danielle and I met at a local forest preserve on a Saturday morning. We worked quickly before the heat of the day set in! As it turns out, she and I are both School Social Workers! We had plenty to talk about as the school year was wrapping up, and preparing for our upcoming newborn arrivals. Danielle is welcoming a baby boy to the family any day now - congratulations!

Julia kept nervously looking back at her mom for reassurance. But within minutes, this 4 year old was posing for me - looking right at the camera, then looking away - moving her hands and pantomiming a story that only she understood. It was all so natural, as though she spends every day modeling in front of the camera!

Julia has cochlear implants and is learning how to speak. We met at the office of one of her therapeutic clinics to help ease her anxiety right off the bat. But something tells me that wasn't necessary - I think the smiles would have been there no matter what location we chose for her Mommy & Me portrait session!

Introducing DSLR Camera Basics Classes ~ Lake County IL Photography Classes http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2016/5/introducing-dslr-camera-basics-classes-lake-county-il-photography-classes I recently upgraded my camera and lenses. I had been shooting with an Olympus camera that I have had for probably 7-8 years. As we all know, electronics get out dated so quickly.  And that camera, although still in great condition, just couldn't keep up.

I purchased a new (to me) Nikon D600 – full frame CMOS sensor with 24.3 megapixels, ISO expandable to 25,600 and continuous shooting up to 6 frames per second … needless to say, it was quite the upgrade!

And since I was switching brands … well, that meant I had a whole new camera to learn. New buttons I didn't have on my Olympus, some of the same buttons that were now in different locations. And even the interface of the buttons – I used to toggle between settings, but now I have two dials to adjust settings…

Needless to say, I was confused.

I had to read the manual and watch a few online tutorials before I felt comfortable even taking a couple of test shots. And I needed quite a few portrait sessions to practice and feel familiar enough with the controls to be efficient while changing the settings.

Now I can only imagine if I was learning the technical aspects of photography, too! Thankfully, I learned the exposure triangle and how to make those adjustments when I first started with photography in junior high and high school with an old 35mm film SLR (Single Lens Reflex, in case you were wondering).

But this is why I have begun to offer Camera Basics Classes. I understand how confusing it is to figure out how the camera works. How frustrating it is  - you see an image in front of you, imagine how you can capture it on the camera …. and yet the image that is taken looks nothing like what you visualized.

And for a limited time, this Camera Basics Class (two classes, actually, with continued online coaching support) will be offered for the introductory price of $49. This price will never again be this low and I wanted to offer my best clients – that's you! - this special offer first. Contact me today to reserve your spot.

Investing in Portrait Photography ~ Capturing Memories ~ Lake County IL Photographer http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2016/5/investing-in-portrait-photography

You're walking out of the kitchen after grabbing a quiet dinner by yourself, past the family room and glance up at the mantel – there is that set of canvas portraits that have been sitting there for over 10 years now. Your kids, ages 3 and 5, playing and being silly, just as little kids do.

Now your kids are 16 and 19 years old and you haven't seen them in days! They are much too busy with school, sports, part time jobs and their friends that your paths just don't cross more than once a day anymore.

What if someone offered you $50 for those canvas portraits of your children – would you sell them? $500? $5000? Of course not – those portraits capture a special moment in time, a time that you can never go back to.

Photography isn’t one of those things we regularly budget for, but it's something that I myself consider an investment.

It's not an investment like the traditional sense. These days, everyone is trying to make smart financial choices, saving money and spending wisely.

Let's say you won some money in a lottery, football pool or just an unexpected bonus … how would you spend it? An extra $5000 could be spread pretty far in my house!

Probably some new electronics, because that's what my husband always wants! The latest and greatest computer or smart TV.

I'd probably purchase some clothes for the kids, because summer is here and I know they can't fit into last year's wardrobe. Maybe a new purse for myself.

And of course, let's spend some of that extra cash on a new family portrait. After the portrait session, I choose my 3 favorite images – not just capturing what they look like, but their fun personalities and this busy time in our lives with 2 little ones under the age of 5. The images are printed as large canvas gallery wraps and placed above the fireplace mantel.

Fast forward 10-15 years – a reasonable time for any investment, right?

My husband's electronics were replaced years ago! The latest fancy TV is up on our wall and that old smart TV is now in the kids den, delegated to play a few video games when they are home for the holidays.

My investment of children's clothing was sold in a garage sale years ago – maybe made $50 in total. That purse might still be sitting on a shelf somewhere, dusty and tattered, but I did use it for many years.

Those canvas portraits? Still sitting above the mantel. I had family portraits taken every few years, but never did replace the pictures on the mantel. Instead, I enjoy looking back and reminiscing on those good old days.

If someone showed up at my house and offered me $5000 for the portraits, I would never take it! Why? Because you can always buy new clothes and electronics. But once your kids are grown, you can’t buy portraits of their childhood.

There aren’t too many things you can buy today that will be guaranteed to be worth more to you in 15 years than they are today.  A beautiful portrait of your family will never go out of style and is in fact priceless.

In my mind, that makes it a wonderful investment.

Capture Brighter Photos on your iPhone ~ Lake County, IL DSLR Camera Classes http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2016/5/capture-brighter-photos-on-your-iphone-lake-county-IL-DSLR-camera-classes Most of use our cell phone cameras more than anything else (I’m guilty too!). Cameras these days are built with great quality, however, they don’t always give us the images we are looking for.

Did you know the iPhone has built in post-processing tools? With an ability to adjust the exposure, color, crop, etc. – nearly any iPhone photo can become a masterpiece!

unedited iPhone imageGrandkids on Easter unedited

Check out this photo my mom took of the grandkids on Easter. The kids were playing nicely, laughing and having a great time. But they were in front of a very bright window. The camera didn’t know how to properly expose this photo, so it just took an average of the light and dark areas and made a guess. What resulted was a window that’s too bright, and cute kid faces that are obscured by shadows.

iPhone exposure editIphone select exposure edit menu

But the iPhone is capable of adjusting the exposure of this image! Click on Edit, then click on the last menu option on the bottom of the screen – it looks like a circle with dots surrounding it. It will open up another menu, with options to adjust the Light, Color and B&W.

iPhone exposure edit menuAdjust Light Options

Click on the Light menu and it will pull up an adjustable scroll of images across the bottom. Drag that scroll to the left or right and the image will become lighter or darker. I choose to adjust the exposure of this image +2 on the lighter side.

Edit iPhone crop menuCrop iPhone photo

Then I did a quick crop of the image to eliminate the distracting element on the left side, decrease the brightness of the window behind, and crop up close on the kids’ faces.

And there you go! A so-so image just became a great profile picture and a beautiful memory of cousins playing together during Easter brunch – all within the camera settings on the iPhone!
