This is because babies change so quickly and lose their newborn features after about two weeks of age. Remember how your newborn would always leave their legs all curled up underneath them and how they would yawn and stretch and wiggle those toes? Yeah - those are the details we so quickly forget ... and why we want to capture images when they are still in the newborn stage.

That being said, please don't hesitate to reach out if your child is past the 10 day old window. This little guy was almost one month old when we took these pictures and he was a perfect model! Took just a little coaxing but fell fast asleep and let us play around with poses and blankets without any more than a squeal out of him!

B Family ~ Wadsworth IL Family Photos http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2018/3/b-family-wadsworth-il-family-photos Last summer my husband won a scooter in a raffle at a summer event. Yes, he really did drive it around for a few weeks before selling it. He wants to use the money to buy a golf cart, but that's a story for another day.

My husband will always splurge for raffle tickets or give a few dollars for a candy bar and any other random thing he's asked to donate to. Defending his choice to drop some cash on yet another auction item, he would say "but it's for a good cause!" And he has said this so many times, its become a joke in our family.

This session was given away "for a good cause" - a mutual friend of ours had a child that was so very sick and was raising money for expenses. I can't fathom the grief she must be facing and can't even wrap my head around that.

Regardless, these guys purchased my donated session and quickly arranged to use their gift certificate. We met in Wadsworth IL for this portrait session. Mom and I hit it off immediately with a mutual love for LuLa Roe leggings & our husbands share the same name!

They last time they had family photos taken these girls were just toddlers. They were having an amazing time running around, dancing and playing (probably because they didn't need to wear their hats and coats on this chilly day!).

Taking the Leap ~ Introducing Wedding Photography http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2018/3/taking-the-leap-introducing-wedding-photography Have you ever been so scared to try something ... but then when you finally did, learned it wasn't really as bad as you thought?

I have - many times, actually. I am definitely not a thrill seeker. Maybe in my "younger days" as I drove a Mustang GT (red - convertible, of course) through the Chicago winters. It was a challenge getting that car through more than an inch of snow on even the slightest incline!

Or that crazy water slide at the Dells. We spend many long weekends at the Wilderness Resort in the Wisconsin Dells. They have one of those single rider body slides - the kind where you stand at the top and the floor drops out from underneath you and you fall through the sky. But wait - it gets worse. This slide then loops you back up in the air and backwards around yourself, essentially creating an upside down roller coaster-like loop in the air before bringing you back down to the ground in a splash pool of water. And yeah, I did it. (Just once though - that was enough!)

But afterwords you get this adrenaline high - this rush - from the thrill seeking adventures. And I don't know if anything beats that! I think it's such an amazing release after the stress you were feeling just a few minutes earlier.

Well, that's kind of what wedding photography felt like for me. Too scared to even consider it over the past six years I've been a professional photographer. Because, well, let's face it - there's no do-overs. If a camera freezes up or a memory card goes on the fritz. Or even worse, my images are out of focus or I missed THE kiss. What a disaster, both for the engaged couple and for myself.

So I stuck with portrait photography all these years. First families, then newborns and sports. I've spent these past six years perfecting my photography. Learning how to work the camera efficiently and gain proper exposure in the camera (no fancy photo shop trickery here!). I've perfected my techniques in posing and non-posing to get some candid moments. And learning how to interact with angry teenagers, wild toddlers and grumpy dads so everyone smiles - at least once.

And then I took the leap. I tried a risk free wedding photography event. And man was I surprised! I wasn't nervous at all and came away with some BEAUTIFUL images

I have never been more excited to open up this new avenue of photography in my business. Please help me get the word out by sharing this post with anyone that you know that is newly engaged.

To celebrate this new venture, I'm offering 25% off any wedding packages booked in 2018. And to share the love, I'm offering 25% off a portrait package for those that aren't getting married (must be booked by May 31, 2018).

Behind the Scenes ~ Post Processing ~ Lake County, IL Photographer http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2018/2/behind-the-scenes-post-processing-lake-county-il-photographer Did you ever wonder why it takes up to two weeks to process your photos and send them back to you? Here's an example of what happens behind the scenes, after your photo shoot is complete.

I'll use this photo from our recent Disney Cruise (yes, it was AMAZING and yes, we put down a deposit to do it again next year!!)

Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.09.44 PMScreen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.09.44 PM

Now this picture has a bit more post processing than I would normally need. I try really hard to get the image as close to perfect as possible in camera (during the photo shoot). However, I had to quickly hand my camera over to a Cast Member (how cool is that - not an employee or staff, they are "Cast Members"!!) to get the shot and I had no chance to adjust the settings.

First I made some adjustments based on the lens I was using - it's a subtle change.

Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.10.06 PMScreen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.10.06 PM

You'll notice less curvature in the outer edges of the image. This is subtle and would be easier to see if the picture was zoomed in tight on the subject. Here, you can see it in the upper left corner how the edge of the background has been straightened out.

Next up was the crop:

Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.10.41 PMScreen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.10.41 PM

On this image, I cropped a bit tighter, taking out some of the background and centering us in the image. During a photo shoot, I might use those cross hairs a bit more and make a more creative image. This is using the "Rule of Thirds," which, in photography speak, means the images are more appealing to our eyes when the subject lines up to one of those cross hairs, rather than the dead center of the photo.

Next I adjusted the white balance. This is also a subtle change, but take a look at Olaf's coloring compared to the original:

Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.11.38 PMScreen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.11.38 PM

The white balance was definitely difficult to do in this image because of all the lighting in this room. Everything from sunlight through the windows, over head lighting, the blue and purple lights for the background and other random spot lighting as this was taken in the dining room. I adjust the white balance on all my photos to ensure that whites turn out white - not blue or yellow tinted.

Here is the most obvious adjustment, the exposure:

Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.12.11 PMScreen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.12.11 PM

This brightens up the photo overall. Now if I was behind the lens in this photo shoot, I would have adjusted this before I took the photo and then made minor adjustments (if any) on the computer. But an amazing camera and an amazing photo editing software means even the worst under exposed photo can be salvaged!

Next, a few adjustments to the exposure's shadows and highlights:

Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.12.58 PMScreen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.12.58 PM

Again, a subtle change, but by brightening up the shadows, you can see that my shorts were blue and not black. You can see more details in Anna's dress and you'll also notice the floor is lighter as it eliminated most of the shadows. Lowering the highlights (the bright areas) is also subtle but you may notice that in the upper left hand corner. Lowering the brightness is most obvious in the natural sky as it tones down the sun glare a bit.

Finally, adjusting the sharpness and contrast:

Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.13.17 PMScreen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.13.17 PM

This is very subtle and it would probably only be seen if I zoom in really tight. I use a lot of sharpness and contrast in landscape photos - brings our the detail in ways you can't even imagine.

And there you go! A before and after:

Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.13.52 PMScreen Shot 2018-02-09 at 6.13.52 PM

Now portrait photography also gets some facial retouching, which you can see below:

Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 5.58.39 PMScreen Shot 2018-02-09 at 5.58.39 PM

Eyes are sharpened, under eye circles lightened and that spot beside his mouth is removed. (This is my son so it's probably a crumb left over from lunch!). For adults, I often "smooth" skin which helps lighten up those wrinkles and smooth out any red splotches.

Here's a full size of that image:

Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 9.10.27 PMScreen Shot 2018-02-09 at 9.10.27 PM

You can see that the before and after is a bit more subtle than the Frozen picture. This is better example of what the images looks like straight out of camera and with some gentle post processing.

Hope you have enjoyed this tour of behind the scenes after the photo shoot!

Fall Portraits http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2017/10/fall-portraits Welcome to October 2017! The weather is very fall-like ... 95 degrees and sunny one day, 65 and cloudy the next! Fall portraits are well underway and these temperatures have been beautiful for pictures. As long as it stays dry (which is has - we are in a bit of a drought) we can create some amazing portraits no matter what the temperature.

Recreating Family Photos ~ G Family ~ Libertyville, IL http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2017/9/recreating-family-photos-g-family-libertyville-il Family Portraits

You know those posts you've seen on Facebook where grown children recreate their childhood photos - same crazy clothes and all? I've always wanted to do that, but with 5 children in my family, it's going to take a lot of coordination! As a photographer, it's the greatest compliment when I hear a family say that my photos have been on their walls since their last photo shoot five years ago. Photography is art and it should be displayed proudly on our walls. Here is that image:

G Family Children's Portraits

These kids wanted to recreate their favorite image from the last photo shoot. And while they kids have grown into teenagers and young adults, I think they nailed it!

Put your best face forward! http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2017/9/put-your-best-face-forward You guys - it's picture day at school today! Even I get so nervous to be in front of the camera from time to time!! And of course my children were up having a party at 3am so I'm exhausted and overslept this morning. But not to worry - I'll only have this photo on my school ID and lanyard to haunt me for the rest of the school year!

This reminds me of my favorite flattering photo tip ... eliminating the dreaded double chin! We all have it - it makes no difference your size or age. There is skin on our necks and our natural posture doesn't tend to be the most flattering. (Please excuse the mug shot selfie ... but you know, this is real life!)

How to eliminate it? Stick your chin out! I tell my clients to think of a chicken - elongate your neck and jut your chin forward, just a tad. It certainly feels funny, but it looks great for photos!

I'll be sure to share my school portrait when they come in. But for now, here's last year's mug shot - 9 months pregnant and swollen with 90+ degree days! This year's photo has got to be better!

Best time of day to take photos! http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2017/7/best-time-of-day-to-take-photos Ever wonder when is the best time of day to take photos?

As photographers, we love the "golden hour," as the hour before the sun sets provides some beautiful lighting.

But for those of us with little kids, that hour before sunset is also known as the "witching hour" as our kids are just nuts! No matter how well behaved your kids might be, attempting photographs at their typical bedtime is probably not going to end well. 😆

So when should we take those pictures?

Anything other than the mid day hours. This photo was taken about 1-2pm, in the shade, facing away from the sun ... but we are still squinting. The sun during the mid day provides so much bright light that is reflected off of everything around us and it's hard not to squint.

But I still love this photo of myself and four generations of family. So don't wait for the perfect lighting or the perfect backdrop (note the garbage in the parking lot around us?) - just take the photo!

My 4 year has been talking for weeks about updating our family portraits, since we are now a family of four. He had quite a few ideas on how we could get them done. His best plan was that I could wear my vest (which I did) to hide the remote (didn't use it) and we should use the wood chips at the Home Depot parking lot (nope) on Tuesday at 2pm (not then either)!

Why use a professional print lab? http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2016/6/why-use-a-professional-print-lab So often I am asked if a professional print lab is really necessary. I know they can't beat the prices at Shutterfly or the turn around time at your local Walgreens. But here's a few things to keep in mind:

Sending your prints to a non-professional lab will produce sub-par prints and inconsistent results. The calibration of the machine and the technician using it will influence the outcome of your images. One day they might have a yellow over cast, next day might be washed out and blue.

Check out these samples below. Look specifically at Samantha's skin tone and hair color. Notice, especially in her hair, how some images look softer and others are more harsh and full of contrast.

Professional Print LabsProfessional Print Labs

The computer I use (my MacBook Pro) to edit images has been calibrated to print at professional print labs, meaning the color profiles will match. The paper quality is superior to absorb those colors and prevent fading over the years.

So where should you print? Check out MPix.com (not an affiliate link - I do not make any money off of your purchases!). Obviously Shutterfly and your local store photo lab are perfectly fine for your daily snapshots. But you've invested in professional quality portraits, why not invest in professional quality prints?

One more thing - if your chosen print lab has the option "Do not color correct", please select this. This means the images will be printed in the color tones that I prepared them to be printed in (or at least as close as possible).

This mom and I spoke at length before scheduling a photo session for her boys. She was worried about scheduling one of my spring "mini" session. Her boys are rather rambunctious and generally don't sit still for the camera long enough to get anything "good".

I reassured this mom that we would work for as long as it takes to get a few great images. Time frames are just as an estimate, and I tend to work fast. We all know a child's attention span is pretty short! Everyone tends to think their kids are the craziest, (mine included!) but it's really common and I'm totally used to it!

Here are the photos ... do you think we didn't "get anything good?"

Introducing DSLR Camera Basics Classes ~ Lake County IL Photography Classes http://www.credphotos.com/blog/2016/5/introducing-dslr-camera-basics-classes-lake-county-il-photography-classes I recently upgraded my camera and lenses. I had been shooting with an Olympus camera that I have had for probably 7-8 years. As we all know, electronics get out dated so quickly.  And that camera, although still in great condition, just couldn't keep up.

I purchased a new (to me) Nikon D600 – full frame CMOS sensor with 24.3 megapixels, ISO expandable to 25,600 and continuous shooting up to 6 frames per second … needless to say, it was quite the upgrade!

And since I was switching brands … well, that meant I had a whole new camera to learn. New buttons I didn't have on my Olympus, some of the same buttons that were now in different locations. And even the interface of the buttons – I used to toggle between settings, but now I have two dials to adjust settings…

Needless to say, I was confused.

I had to read the manual and watch a few online tutorials before I felt comfortable even taking a couple of test shots. And I needed quite a few portrait sessions to practice and feel familiar enough with the controls to be efficient while changing the settings.

Now I can only imagine if I was learning the technical aspects of photography, too! Thankfully, I learned the exposure triangle and how to make those adjustments when I first started with photography in junior high and high school with an old 35mm film SLR (Single Lens Reflex, in case you were wondering).

But this is why I have begun to offer Camera Basics Classes. I understand how confusing it is to figure out how the camera works. How frustrating it is  - you see an image in front of you, imagine how you can capture it on the camera …. and yet the image that is taken looks nothing like what you visualized.

And for a limited time, this Camera Basics Class (two classes, actually, with continued online coaching support) will be offered for the introductory price of $49. This price will never again be this low and I wanted to offer my best clients – that's you! - this special offer first. Contact me today to reserve your spot.
